On the distant world of Mamba-Kobe, society worked together to always try to improve themselves and others around them. They had done this for so long that their children were born with an extreme motivated personality infused in their DNA. But what happens when a child is born without this drive? This is the story of such an individual.

Speglan grew up in an average home with a large family. He had seven brothers and sisters. It was not unusual on Mamba-Kobe to have a large family. More family just meant more people around to help one achieve more. But Speglan didn’t want any of that. Speglan really just wanted some time to himself, away from everyone. As time went on this proved to be impossible.

The world kept growing in population and people were everywhere. For anyone born with the Kobe mentality, this was not a problem. People worked together to help each other. How could Speglan explain to others that the best way to help him was to simply leave him alone? It was slowly driving him crazy.

Because he couldn’t get time alone, it made it difficult for him to concentrate on his education. He was constantly distracted in class and never able to complete his homework. His classmates didn’t know what to do. They wanted to be there for him, but didn’t understand that he just needed to be left alone.

One day he just had enough and ran out of class. To hide from anyone looking for him, he went into the nearest building. The one he was closest to was the Tower for Witchcraft and Sorcery. On the planet Mamba-Kobe no ability was left unexplored. Speglan had never entered this part of the school before. He heard noises coming from above. While he wanted to hide, he also found himself a bit curious on what could be going on to cause such a ruckus.

Speglan climbed the stairs and at the top found a massive door. Walking through it he found himself in a ceremonial room for spellcasting. In the center there were several witches surrounding a solitary witch in the middle. He recognized the witch in the center as Chisella. He had only heard stories of her from when he was a small child. He thought they were myths made up to encourage kids to do the right thing in helping others. Chisella in the stories was always causing problems. Only through working together were the people of Mamba-Kobe able to stop her. This is what started the mentality of their people to always work together to help each other improve themselves.

To see Chisella here in person was a horrifying sight. She had already knocked out most of the witches and sorcerers that were working together to stop her. Speglan didn’t know what to do. All he wanted to do was hide for some time to himself, but he had to do something here to help. Chisella had her back to him as she likely didn’t expect anyone new to come through the door.

Speglan decided that he already felt like he was going crazy on his world, so why not one more insane act? Speglan charged at Chisella. At the last moment, Chisella turned around and in an act of defense she threw a potion flask at Speglan just as he tackled her. The container shattered and the contents inside splashed all over Speglan.

The remaining witches and sorcerers ran over quickly to bind Chisella. Even though she was now captured, Chisella began to cackle, “Oh, you may have stopped me young one, but you’ll find you’re the one cursed with that mess on you! Hee hee hee!!”

Speglan smelled the potion that was spilled on him and found it to be most foul. “Ugh!! What is this?”

Chisella responded with delight. “That is my dingleberry potion! It will destroy this society! Anyone with the Kobe mentality in their DNA will wither away and from there it will spread. Your drive to improve yourself and those around you will be your downfall!”

With a bit of a laugh at his fate, Speglan asked, “What if you already don’t have that drive built in you? What if you were born different?”

Shock and fear spread across Chisella’s face as she began to realize fate had thrown her a wicked hand by having her potion land on the one person that could not help her cause.

As she began to scream and fight the chains on her, Speglan started to notice his feet lifting off the ground. Could he seriously be flying? As he lifted up higher and higher, he looked up to see he was approaching the ceiling with no way to stop himself. He wasn’t prepared to have superpowers. He curled himself up and closed his eyes to prepare himself for the impact. The collision never came.

Speglan opened his eyes again, and found himself flying outside of the tower. He had somehow teleported outside of the building. This was amazing! For the first time in his life, he felt free and happy.

Speglan closed his eyes again and concentrated on a faraway land where he could be alone. When he opened his eyes, he was floating above a grassy plain in the middle of some mountains. It was just the type of area he always wanted. A valley where he could have some peace for himself.

He closed his eyes again and teleported back to the tower where this all started. Everyone had left as they were either putting Chisella in prison or looking to see where the hero boy disappeared off to.

Speglan knew from this moment on that things would be different. His life would be better. He searched the room before leaving again, and grabbed a book of spells he thought might be useful one day. He then teleported away, back to his valley of peace.

Over the years no one knew what happened to Speglan. He was almost never seen. But here and there a little act of kindness would be discovered. A lost cat would be returned. Flowers would appear on one’s doorstep. A walkway would be shoveled. Just little things that made everyone’s lives a little better would happen. And though no one ever saw Speglan in class ever again, somehow he never missed turning in his homework assignment on time. Was this another superpower he gained? Who knows how many powers that dingleberry potion unlocked?

What we do know is that Speglan found a place that made him happy, and in doing so, he found the importance of helping others so they could be happy as well.
