I don’t remember how I got here. It feels like it was just minutes ago I was walking down the street and my whole world just went black. Next thing I know I’m waking up in a hospital room and a nurse is approaching me.

She softly speaks to me, saying, “Look who finally decided to wake up and join the land of the living again.”

“Where am I?” My throat is hoarse as I struggle to get those three words out.

“You’re in St. Mercy Hospital,” she responded.

“What happened?”

“From what I heard, you were hit from behind when a truck hauling moonstones from the latest space mission spun out and collided with you. When EMTs first found you, they thought it was already too late. Then a miracle happened. You gasped a few times after already being pronounced dead on arrival.”

My head was spinning from the news. I couldn’t remember any of that. Then again, I couldn’t even remember my name. “Do you know who I am?”

The nurse replied a bit alarmed. “We were hoping you could tell us when you woke. You didn’t have any identification on you, and even though your face has been shown on the news for days, no one has come to claim knowing you.”

“Days?!” How is any of this possible?

“No need to work yourself up. We’re going to help you recover and then maybe you’ll remember who you are.” The nurse frantically worked to calm me down. I couldn’t tell if it was out of concern for me or if she was worried about how someone else might react if I was agitated.

She then ordered me to stay where I was and she would bring me a sedative to help me relax and get some rest.

Once she left the room, I forced myself up and out of bed. There was no way I was staying where I was. Apparently, I had already been resting for days. No one was keeping me here any longer than I wanted to be. Plus, how the nurse reacted made me feel like maybe I was being kept here for reasons beyond my recovery.

I likely couldn’t just walk out the door. Someone would see me leaving, and if they didn’t want that to happen, then it means that door was guarded or watched. I looked out the window. Nothing good there either. The windows were sealed and we were on the third floor. That would be a long way down, but I had to take the chance.

Grabbing a chair in the room, I swung it towards the window. It only slightly scraped the glass. No doubt someone already heard that noise and would be coming soon. I had to get out of here. I put everything I had into the next swing. Still not much more progress; only a slight crack.

I was getting frustrated and angry. I channeled all of that rage into my next two thrusts, and the window finally shattered. By then it was too late. Three very large men in black suits came barreling through the door. My escape was foiled…or so I thought.

Even though I was standing right in front of them, they rushed right past me as if I wasn’t even there and looked out the window. It was as if they could not see me. It was then that I glanced over at the mirror in the room. They didn’t see me because no one could see me. My reflection wasn’t there. I was completely invisible.

Using the opportunity and not knowing how long it would last, I raced out the door and down the hall.

This didn’t look like a normal hospital to me, but then again, I still couldn’t remember who I was, so what do I know about what a hospital should look like? It just felt off.

I was starting to calm a bit and catch my breath, but that’s when I saw in the glass window of the door in front of me that I was starting to reappear again. I ducked into a room nearby. It was another hospital-style room, but thankfully no one was in here. I searched the room for anything that could help me. All I found were some clothes that, while a little big for me, were better than the hospital gown I had been wearing.

At this point I looked in the mirror in this room and could see myself completely. I needed to escape but I still didn’t know how. How did I become invisible before?

My heart rate was up when it happened. I was mad and swinging the chair. Maybe if I raise my heart rate again, I can turn invisible again?

I started running in place intensely, and sure enough as my heart rate went up, I began to disappear in the mirror.

I raced out the door realizing if I want any hope of getting out of here, I would need to keep running. I ran through two large doors that I believed was an exit. It wasn’t.

Instead, where I found myself was a big hangar with several people surrounding a large rock. The rock was humming almost like it was vibrating, and it had a slight bluish glow to it. Could this be the moonstone the nurse was telling me about? My head was hurting as I tried to remember anything that happened.

There were construction vehicles tearing away at the stone and moving what they removed to large hauling trucks. The room was thick with dust from it all. Some of it got into my mouth as I tried to breathe.

“Hey! Who are you and how did you get in here?!” A man in a construction hat was coming towards me from across the room and pointing right at me. Oh no! I stopped running and my invisibility was wearing off!

Other men started to approach with guns.

Without even a moment of hesitation, they raised their rifles towards me and opened fire. My hands instinctively went up in a defensive motion as if I could stop bullets with pure willpower. But the incredible thing was…that’s exactly what happened. The bullets were just floating there. The men fired more until they were completely out, and every single bullet just hung in the air until I lowered my hands and they dropped to the floor.

What was happening to me? Who am I? What was that place?

All of these questions would have to be answered another time. I needed to leave. Even though the men coming after me with their weapons were stunned initially, they regained their senses and started to charge.

I ran along the wall trying to put one of the trucks between me and them. As I ran, I began to become invisible again. The men lost sight of me and explored where they believed I may have gone.

I still didn’t know how I would get out of this building. Running was becoming harder and harder to do as the room was quite thick with the moonstone dust. I kept inhaling it as I ran.

All I wanted to do was leave. I desperately reached my hands out to a far wall, concentrating with all my might to possibly bust the wall open in front of me. If I could stop bullets with my mind, maybe I could break open a wall.

The wall in front of me then shattered, but it wasn’t due to my recent telekinetic discovery. The intense concentration had caused my eyes to strain and tear up. Then lasers shot out from them. The wall blasted open, and right there was my freedom.

The men trying to find me were startled as they didn’t know what had just happened. To be honest, I didn’t know what occurred myself. I just knew if I kept running, I could stay invisible and make my escape.

The men followed out the hole in the wall, but I was already long gone.

It’s now days later. I still don’t know who I am nor what those people wanted with me. I still have that horrible taste in my mouth from that moonstone dust. Did that cause these powers to appear? If it did, then why did none of the men in the hangar have any? Was there something special about me?

I have so many questions, and I hope one day to find the answers. For now, though, to keep myself safe, I will have to remain the unknown.
